Maureen Child Update 6 August

Posted on: August 6th, 2021

Dear All

How was your July?  Mine was home and garden based, trying hard not to get sucked into working during Council recess.  Back to what passes for my ‘normal’!  But only for another 9 months….

Some summer fun might have to be postponed this weekend due to the bad weather forecast.  Sounds like Portobello Market might have challenges this Saturday with wellies and waterproofs required.  Hopefully it will work out and I might actually make it there this month.  Friends of Porty Prom and Keep Porty Tidy have postponed their joint clean up to Saturday 14 August in light of this weekend’s Yellow Weather Warning.

No Porty Podcast this week, but there have been some recent great ones, thanks to the amazing David Calder for all his work on this, creating a local community sound archive to be proud of. Click here for the back numbers: https://www.buzzsprout.com/71622

One commitment I had over the period was to support St John’s RC Church, Father Jock, friends and neighbours in the daunting task of raising the shortfall of cash they need to pay for essential repairs to the tower of this iconic local building.  The congregation have made St. John’s a hub and sanctuary for all our community over this really tough period.  Even after grants have been secured, the balance of the cost of keeping the tower safe and secure is a significant sum.  Click here: https://theedinburghreporter.co.uk/2021/08/step-forward-to-save-landmark-edinburgh-steeple/

On Monday 9 August, a consultation opens on a Controlled Parking Zone for Portobello.  If you live in the proposed area, as I do, you should have received an A4 glossy leaflet outlining most of what you need to know.  More next week. The consultation is not live until Monday.  Portobello is part of Phase 4 of a citywide parking review. Page link is here: www.consultprojectcentre.co.uk/parkingph4

Next weekend is Craigmillar Festival. Exciting! More here: https://craigmillarfestival.org/

That’s all for now.

Kind regards

Maureen
