City of Edinburgh Council officials say that, following a decision taken in 2011, they now need to close some public toilets outwith the city centre in a bid to save £300,000 annually.
They are asking for feedback on the proposals via an online survey: Toilet Closure Survey

In Portobello, the proposals could see the toilets at 82 Joppa Road being axed, but the loos at 4 Bath Street and 60 Pipe Lane (on the Prom) are no longer being considered for closure.
Respondents to Portobello Community Council’s consultation on the toilet closure plans in December and January were overwhelmingly against closure of any of the beach facilities.
More than 300 people took part in that consultation, with over 90% objecting or strongly objecting to the closure proposal.

Closure criteria
Council officials say the list of toilets earmarked for closure has been drawn up based on the following criteria:
• Condition
• Usage
• Accessibility
• Alternative publicly accessible toilets
• Potential for Community Toilet Scheme in local area
They also say that: “Over 60 publicly accessible toilets have been identified in Council buildings across the city which can be viewed here. Access to these facilities is subject to opening times.”
