Representation on 14/05266/FUL – 13 Bath St

Portobello Community Council has made a comment (neither support or object) on planning applications 14/05266/FUL and 15/00060/CON for 13 Bath St, the former Towerbank Annexe.

A couple of residents have raised concern with us regarding an aspect of this application, plus it was discussed during our meeting on Monday 26 Jan.

The site plan calls out that the existing traffic calming feature on Bath St would be removed and replaced by four dedicated parking spaces. We have the following concerns:

  • This feature currently provides a safe crossing point for pedestrians, especially for children and families to the adjacent day nursery
  • It marks a change in the characteristics of the road, with it being narrow & residential to the north of the traffic calming. This helps to reduce the travel of heavy trucks past this point
  • It provides a staging point, allowing cars coming in the opposite direction to pass while others wait (due to the single-lane reality of Bath St due to parking on one side)
  • Parking on an adopted public highway should not be reserved for dedicated private use
