In September, Portobello Community Council is celebrating the contribution of Richard Demarco to the cultural life of Edinburgh, by hosting a lecture by Richard at Edinburgh College’s Milton Road Campus. Richard’s family is from Portobello, two Italian families, the Demarcos and the Fuscos, having established cafe-restaurants on Portobello Promenade, a quarter of a mile apart, at the beginning of the 20th century. Recently, Richard has been honoured with gold medals from Germany, Poland and Romania; was made European Citizen of the Year in August 2013; and in March 2014 was presented with the annual Edinburgh Award.
